- CAIRO: The Cairo headquarters of the Arab League hosted an important conference that ended on Tuesday to discuss implementation of a 2000 convention on settling investment disputes in Arab countries.
The conference was attended by Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Al-Arabi, Egyptian Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Hazem Albeblawi, Arab justice ministers, businessmen and others.
Prominent Saudi attorney Khalid Alnowaiser participated in the conference that discussed several important subjects, including a session on the obstacles faced by inter-Arab investments that was headed by Yahya Jamal, former deputy prime minister and professor of public law at the Faculty of Law at Cairo University.
Several working papers were presented on the challenges and prospects of Arab investments, such as dealing with financial and administrative corruption, poor control mechanisms, and the role of Arab Parliaments in enacting legislation to overcome investment hurdles.
A second session focused on the nature and sources of investment disputes in Arab countries, the means available to avoid and settle such disputes, investment laws in Arab countries, and the problems arising from the conclusion and implementation of investment contracts in the Middle East. The third session addressed the practical problems of collective Arab agreements on the investment process, problems and proposed solutions of the Arab Investment Court, and the difficulties of implementing judicial decisions and arbitral awards in Arab countries.
At the conference’s conclusion, members of the Secretariat of the Arab Association for International Arbitration were elected.
The conference was organized by the Arab Parliament, the Arab Association for International Arbitration, the Cairo Regional Center for International Commercial Arbitration, and the Arab Investors Union.
