Wideman rifled a shot from just inside the right circle past goalie Brent Johnson to keep Washington unbeaten in three games this season.

Alexander Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season for the Capitals, who have won eight straight regular-season games in Pittsburgh. Mike Knuble also scored, and Tomas Vokoun bounced back from a shaky debut with Washington to finish with 39 saves.

James Neal scored twice, tying it on a power play with 3:45 left in the third, and Evgeni Malkin had two assists for the Penguins.  

In Detroit, Jimmy Howard made 25 saves for his sixth career shutout to lead Detroit past Vancouver.

Justin Abdelkader and Valtteri Filppula scored for Detroit in the Red Wings’ second straight shutout. Ty Conklin was in goal for a 3-0 victory in Colorado on Saturday night.

Cory Schneider stopped 35 shots for Vancouver.

In Chicago, Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists to help Chicago overcome an early two-goal deficit in a victory over Winnipeg.

Linemate Marian Hossa added a goal and an assist, and Andrew Brunette and Dave Bolland also scored for the Blackhawks. Jim Slater scored twice early in the first period for the Jets, and Kyle Wellwood added a goal late in the second.

The Jets, who relocated from Atlanta in the offseason, dropped to 0-2. They lost their home opener to Montreal 5-1 on Sunday night.

In Newark, New Jersey,  Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise scored shootout goals and New Jersey won its second straight game, beating Los Angeles.

Johan Hedberg , who replaced an injured Martin Brodeur at the start of the second period, made easy stops on Simon Gagne and Anze Kopitar on the Kings’ shootout chances to send Los Angeles to its second straight loss.

Patrick Elias scored in regulation for New Jersey and Gagne got his first goal as a King to open the game.

In Ottawa, Joakim Lindstrom scored twice and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 15 saves in his first start for Colorado to help the Avalanche rout Ottawa.

Rookie Gabriel Landeskog , Milan Hejduk and Matt Duchene each had a goal and an assist, Daniel Winnik and David Jones also scored and Ryan O’Reilly had three assists for Colorado. 

In Uniondale, New York, John Tavares had two goals and two assists in the first period and New York ruined former Islanders goalie Dwayne Roloson’s return to Long Island, routing Tampa Bay.

Matt Moulson and P.A. Parenteau also had first-period goals. Michael Grabner scored in the second period for New York, ending Roloson’s night in goal. Al Montoya made 34 saves for the Islanders, allowing only Steven Stamkos’s first-period goal.

In St. Paul Minnesota, Devin Setoguchi scored in the fourth round of the shootout for Minnesota, spoiling a strong night by Edmonton goalie Nikolai Khabibulin .

Khabibulin was nearly impenetrable, standing firm during a third period in which the Wild outshot the Oilers 14-1. Matt Cullen , who had the only goal for Minnesota in regulation, scored first in the shootout before Khabibulin denied the next two shooters.

In Nashville, Tennessee, David Schlemko, Ray Whitney and Lauri Korpikoski each scored in the first period and Phoenix beat Nashville, ruining the Predators’ big party for their home opener.

Shane Doan had an empty-netter and an assist, and Mikkel Boedker had a goal as the Coyotes capped their three-game trip to open the season with their first victory.

In  Montreal, Miikka Kiprusoff made 35 saves in his Calgary-record 263rd victory and Rene Bourque scored twice, leading the Flames past Montreal in the Canadiens’ home opener.

Kiprusoff moved past Mike Vernon for the franchise record, helping Calgary to its first win in three games.

Niklas Hagman and David Moss also scored for the Flames. Andrei Kostitsyn scored for Montreal.

In Dallas, Kari Lehtonen stopped 36 shots, Loui Eriksson scored short-handed, and Dallas hung on to beat St. Louis. Lehtonen has allowed only four goals in his first three starts this season, all victories.

Brenden Morrow added a power-play goal and Adam Burish connected at even strength for Dallas (3-1).
