Tuoi Tre newspaper says the suspects were detained when police raided a hotel in the resort city of Nha Trang.

They were accused of impersonating Chinese law enforcement officials in Internet phone calls to suspected law offenders in mainland China and coercing them to transfer money to their accounts.

So far, Vietnam has arrested 192 Taiwanese and 106 Chinese in similar swindling cases. Most of them have been deported.

Similar rings had operated in China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.
