- BRUSSELS: The European Union says it has a technical agreement with Ukraine on a free trade deal, but Kiev has to move on political issues linked to the jailing of a former prime minister before that can become a full accord.
The office of EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said Thursday the agreement was reached during talks with Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Andriy Klyuyev, two days after a visit by President Viktor Yanukovych was indefinitely postponed when it became clear opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko would not be immediately released.
De Gucht’s spokesman John Clancy says it is now up to Ukraine’s leadership to create the right political conditions to make sure the full deal can be signed and enacted.
