“Jeddah police received a communication from Al-Jedani Hospital near Al-Samir neighborhood that an infant with severe head injuries has been admitted to the hospital,” police spokesman Lt. Nawwaf Al-Bouq said.

“The hospital told the police that the infant had unusual injuries to the head and severe bruises to the body, and the child could possibly be brain dead,”  he added.

Al-Bouq said police investigators were immediately dispatched to the hospital where they asked to meet with the infant’s parents.

It was then decided to transfer the one-and-a-half-year-old infant to King Fahd Hospital.

“During questioning both parents admitted to investigators that the baby had suffered injuries to her head while playing. It was a fall that caused the injuries to her head. Investigators then questioned the parents separately, and found out the truth," he added.

Al-Bouq said, “The baby's mother confessed to the police that the child’s father had assaulted the girl with a broomstick, laying a blow to the head. He had also thrown the baby onto the bed causing the body bruises. Medical reports showed that the baby had several blood clots particularly behind the ear and on the forehead."

Security personnel immediately arrested the child's father.

The social services manager at King Fahd Hospital, Talal Al-Nashiri, said, "The child is currently receiving treatment at the hospital’s intensive care unit and her medical condition has been relayed to the police.”
