- ANKARA: The head of an education foundation says that among 600 people killed in the massive quake, 64 are teachers.
The 7.2.-magnitude quake struck eastern Van province on Oct. 23, leveling buildings and leaving thousands homeless.
Ihsan Ozcukurlu, chairman of the National Education Foundation, told the state-run Anatolia news agency Monday that 64 teachers were among the dead. He says “40 teachers were still unaccounted for.”
Turkish media reports, citing rescue workers, said nearly one-third of the teachers were crushed to death as they gathered at the multistory Buse café in the worst-hit town of Ercis.
Several countries including the United States have sent tents and blankets for thousands of homeless.
