- TRIPOLI: A Libyan fighter says two people have been killed in a clash between rival militias near Tripoli, in the latest in a series of armed confrontations between former fighters since they brought down Muammar Qaddafi’s regime last month.
There has been growing concern about the proliferation of weapons ownership among ex-rebels and others during the country’s eight-month civil war, but Libya’s interim leaders say they’ll need to establish new security forces before they can disarm the revolutionaries.
Anwar Al-Bishti, a local militia commander, said Saturday that violence erupted after one militia tried to disarm a rival, which had set up an impromptu roadblock west of Tripoli and started harassing motorists. He said two people died in the Friday clash, but did not give further details about the circumstances of their deaths.
