When the game’s most tense moments arrive, count on the two-time MVP to deliver.

Yap scored all but two of B-Meg’s final 12 points, while rookie Mark Barroca collected a career-best 22 markers and the Llamados needed two overtime periods to beat Alaska, 92-89, Sunday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The popular player punctuated his end-game brilliance with a pair of fall-away jumpers, carrying the Llamados away from a dangerous 88-86 lead and onto a comfortable 92-87 advantage with merely 43 ticks remaining in the contest.

“It was an epic game. It was a game of big shots,” said B-Meg coach Tim Cone. “My hats off to coach Joel (Banal). He coached a perfect game. He had tempo and he got defense.

“It’s very important to reach over the .500 mark. I’m happy for the turnaround, we achieved what we wanted. I thought we were a little bit tired and sluggish.”  Regulation ended at 73-73, and the first overtime was at 80-80 after Barroca misfired on a turnaround fade-away jumper with 0.2 seconds left to play.

Rain or Shine, a team that usually beats opponents to a pulp, absorbed a dose of its own medicine later in the night, dropping a 90-80 decision against an in-form Petron.

The Elasto Painters never got their vaunted offensive going and failed to apply the defense that was already improving against the Boosters, suffering their second loss in nine games and witnessing an end to their five-game winning streak.

Petron picked up its sixth victory against three setbacks, and moved to solo third to improve its chances of landing in the Top Two spots where a twice-to-beat incentive against the seventh- and eighth-ranked ball clubs is at hand.

The Boosters held the Painters to only 16 percent shooting in the first quarter to assume a 22-12 lead. From there, it was a Petron show all the way. The best Rain or Shine could cut the deficit was to within 83-75, but Alex Cabagnot retaliated with a three-point shot to defuse to the rally.

Cabagnot earned top honors for the game with his 16 points, 11 assists and five rebounds, and Arwind Santos topscored with 25 for Petron, the reigning Governors’ Cup champion which clinched its third straight victory.

Chris Lutz, after a three-game absence due to an hamstring injury, returned to pour in 22 points.

B-Meg, with the win, thus recorded a sweep of its head-to-head duel with Alaska in the eliminations. The Llamados, who now have conquered their last three opponents, won over the Aces last Oct. 12 (81-75) with, concidentally, Yap leading B-Meg to victory with 20 points.

The Aces now are in deep trouble making it to the playoffs with their seventh defeat in eight games. The 13-time champion franchise is lodged at ninth spot, just a shade above winless Shopinas.com (0-9, win-loss).

Kerby Raymundo added 14 points, 13 rebounds and six assists while Mark Pingris had 10 points for B-Meg.

LA Tenorio scored 28 points for Alaska, but was hardly a factor in the two overtime periods after suffering cramps. Cyrus Baguio contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds and Jay-R Reyes had 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Alaska actually had a chance to win it in regulation, and had 17.5 seconds to pull it off in its final offensive play.

But Reyes, receiving a perfect feed from Tenorio, bungled a reverse lay-up.

B-Meg, on the other hand, missed its chance to win it outright in the first extra period, but never let the opportunity slip away in the second overtime.

Last Saturday night, Ginebra came through with a huge second quarter to repeat over Shopinas.com, 92-79, in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

The Kings outscored the Clickers 33-13 in the second period, and what was once a shaky 20-18 lead after the opening quarter transformed into a 53-31 lead at halftime Shopinas.com never was able to threaten anymore.
