- AMMAN: Security was beefed up around the Syrian Embassy in Amman on Tuesday as a precautionary measure against possible reprisal action following attack on Jordanian Embassy in Damascus by dozens of pro-regime Syrian citizens on Monday.
Jordanian security men cordoned off the building housing the Syrian diplomatic mission in the Abdoun neighborhood Monday night after hundreds of Jordanians tried to storm the building in retaliation for an assault on the Jordanian Embassy in Damascus.
About 100 Syrians staged a protest in front of the Jordanian diplomatic mission in Damascus on Monday and shouted ”offending slogans,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Kayed said.
He said that three of them climbed the building’s walls and brought down the Jordanian flag.
He denied earlier reports that the protesters hoisted the Syrian flag over the Jordanian mission.
Kayed urged the Syrian authorities to “ensure adequate protection for the Jordanian Embassy and the rest of the foreign diplomatic missions in compliance with the universally-observed conventions.”
The row between Jordan and Syria coincided with a call on the government by the country’s main opposition party, the Islamic Action Front to withdraw the Jordanian ambassador from Damascus in compliance with earlier an Arab League decision, which also suspended Syria’s membership in the organization.
Kayed said that the League’s call on member countries to pull out diplomats from the Syrian capital was ”not binding” on member states because such a step pertains to a sovereign decision.
