“They can file a lawsuit against the school building owner or others if they were found guilty in causing the accident,” the source said. “Once the investigation is over, it will be clear who is to blame for the tragedy,” he added.

He said the families could sue parties who caused the accident in order to get compensation and blood money. The families of the two dead teachers can claim a blood money of SR150,000 each.

The blood money for killing a person intentionally is SR200,000 for a woman, the source said. The amount is SR400,000 for men.

Meanwhile, the Civil Defense department confirmed that the fire-hit Baraim Al-Watan School had all safety means in place, including emergency exits and fire sensors.

“Civil Defense firefighters reached the spot within five minutes after receiving the alert,” the department said, adding that it had sent three helicopters to assist in rescue operations. “The fire was not caused by anyone,” it pointed out.

Brig. Abdullah Al-Misaad, assistant director of forensic evidence, said he arrived from Riyadh on Sunday and began investigations by questioning teachers and other witnesses.

“We are still in the process of gathering evidence,” Al-Misaad said, adding that the final report would reveal the cause of the fire.
