- SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq: An Iraqi official says Turkish air strikes on suspected Kurdish rebel bases in northern Iraq have critically wounded two Iraqi villagers.
Azad Waso, a local official at the town of Qalat Diza in Sulaimaniyah province, said on Wednesday that Turkish jets bombed six villages on Mount Qandil late on Tuesday night.
Waso says about 200 cattle were killed in the attacks.
Roz Wellat, a spokesman for the Kurdish rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, says there were no causalities among the rebels.
Mount Qandil is the main guerrilla base along Iraq’s border. From there, Kurdish rebels have staged hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets across the border in their decades-long campaign for autonomy in Turkey’s Kurdish-dominated southeast.
