In a statement posted on its website, the air force says one of its maritime patrol planes spotted Albert Deschipper and his sailboat the “Rolleman” on Tuesday 195 miles (315 kilometers) off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

Friday’s statement noted that the Dutch Consulate in Rio de Janeiro asked Brazilian authorities for help after being contacted by Deschipper’s wife, who had spoken to her husband by radio.

Deschipper left the Netherlands more than a month ago and was heading to Uruguay to meet up with his wife.

The statement did not explain how he got lost.
