During his long life in Jeddah, Moopan was involved in various community welfare and development activities. He had served as president of the Muslim Education Society’s Jeddah chapter, Saudi Indian Football Forum, World Malayali Council, Jeddah Keralite Doctors Forum, Saudi Indian Medical Forum and Kairali.

He was also patron of Kerala Kalasahithi from its inception.

“Apart from holding leadership positions in many forums of Keralites, Dr. Moopan had been a driving force for many other Indian organizations in Jeddah including India Forum and Indian Economic Forum,” said Usman Irumpuzhi, president of Indian Media Forum and a long-time friend and associate of Moopan.

“It’s a big loss for the community,” said Alungal Muhammad, chairman and managing director of Al-Abeer Group, where Moopan had worked for seven years. Speaking from Bangalore on telephone, Muhammad highlighted Moopan’s contributions to the educational uplift of the Muslim community, which included introducing a scholarship program for poor students, providing guidance to parents and organizing educative programs. He had also worked for communal harmony.

Indian community leaders and MES officials have expressed their deep sorrow over Moopan’s death and commended his humanitarian services. Moopan had left Jeddah with the intention of opening a charitable medical center in Kannur for the treatment of children suffering from mental problems and ailments.

Moopan began his career as a psychiatrist with the Indian Army before joining Kerala government health services. He had worked in government hospitals in Manjeri and Kannur. After leaving Saudi Arabia in May 2011, he was working as the CEO of the Specialty Hospital Kannur where he had settled permanently.

He is survived by his wife Fouzia, a pediatrician who worked in Jeddah for about 28 years, and daughter Rubina who works for Manipal Hospital in Bangalore.
