- SANAA: Strikes are spreading in Yemen’s capital as hundreds of government employees rally, demanding reforms and the firing of top managers over alleged corruption linked to the country’s outgoing president.
Corruption was one of the grievances that ignited mass protests against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh in February.
Hundreds of employees demonstrated Wednesday in front of an economics institute linked to the Defense Ministry, demanding the sacking of its manager, Hafez Mayad. The institute is among the country’s wealthiest and Mayad, who is from Saleh’s tribe, is seen as one of the regime’s most powerful and corrupt figures.
Outside Sanaa police headquarters, about 150 officers held a protest, demanding the removal of the security chief. They clashed briefly with his guards.
