The Saudi Patient Safety Center (SPSC) recently launched the National Patient Safety Award (NPSA).

The launch ceremony at the Narcissus Hotel in Riyadh was attended by a number of representatives from health organizations and institutions in the Kingdom, SPSC officials, and members of the media.

The award aims to highlight how good health and safety practices can go hand in hand to help reduce medical errors and cut their resulting damages that adversely affect the Saudi health system. NPSA will be given in three key categories: Health facilities, health practitioners, and community members.

The first prize is allocated to the top health facilities in terms of the best hospital, medical center, health care center or pharmacy. The second prize is given to the best health practitioners including the best physician, nurse, pharmacist and leader, while the third category award is dedicated to the best body showcasing excellent performance in community involvement. The National Patient Safety Award is supervised by a jury of local and international experts in patient safety.

“The National Patient Safety Award is primarily intended to encourage everyone who relates to the Saudi medical arena to lead and make significant progress in eliminating preventable medical errors. This trend underlines our solid commitment to offering healthy, zero-error environments,” said Dr. Abdulelah Alhawsawi, director general of Saudi Patient Safety Center. “Patient safety ranks on top of the health facilities’ concerns. And in order to achieve higher levels in patient safety, it is essential to adopt an organised inclusive system based on clear-cut performance, periodic medical follow-up in the health facilities, and unswerving supervision to preserve the patients’ safety and avoid medical errors in the therapeutic practice,” Dr. Alhawsawi added.

SPSC aims to upgrade awareness of patient safety, strengthen and improve the culture of best practices in patient safety in all health facilities across the Kingdom, and conduct studies and research to improve the quality of health facilities with regard to patient safety.
