The historic walls of the ancient city of Aleppo have been destroyed gradually, along with shops and caravanserais for tourists, since 2012 by Bashar Assad’s forces.
Al-Hatab Square was the center of the historic quarter, surrounded by many churches, hammams, khans and caravanserais.
It was one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs, but now nothing is left as reported in Arab News (“War leaves famed Old City ‘unrecognizable,’” Dec. 14). No one thought these ancient buildings could be violated the way they are today.
Syrian pro-government forces showed no mercy for history or even the present. The sad part is many souls were lost for these walls to be built, and many were lost by their demolition. No historical value, economy or even heritage are left. All tradesmen have lost the hereditary profession they thought they would pass to their sons. Separated bricks and mortar are all that have survived of the biggest blow to Syria’s rebellion.
