- Former prime minister is currently serving a sentence on graft charges
- Party demands that he be allowed to travel to London for specialized treatment
ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was moved back from hospital to Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail on Thursday where he is currently serving a seven-year sentence in a graft case.
Sharif had been admitted to Lahore’s Services Hospital last Saturday upon the recommendation of a medical board. Once there, he had to undergo a series of medical tests, with doctors confirming later that he had multiple heart-related and other health complications.
On Wednesday, Sharif refused to visit the Punjab Institute of Cardiology in Lahore and, according to his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, insisted on returning to jail.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which Sharif heads as a supreme leader, has been demanding that the three times former premier be moved to London for specialized medical treatment.
Sharif’s legal team has already filed an application for the same in the Islamabad High Court seeking a bail on medical grounds.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling in the 2017 Panama Papers scandal — which disqualified Sharif from holding office — the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), an anti-corruption watchdog, had filed three graft cases against him and his family — namely in the Avenfield properties case, the Flagship Investment case, and Al-Azizia Steel Mills case.
Sharif was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Avenfield case but acquitted in the Flagship one.
