Riyadh: Saudi national team coach Herve Renard will be hoping to improve on his record in friendly matches when the Green Falcons take on Bolivia on Tuesday at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium in Jeddah.

The Frenchman successfully led the squad to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, were they caused the upset of the tournament by beating eventual champions Argentina 2-1.

However, the team’s record in friendly matches he has overseen remains modest — in the main part due to experimentation — with three victories, five draws, and five losses from 13 games.

Renard’s first friendly in charge of Saudi Arabia came in September 2019 with a 1-1 draw against Mali and was followed by a goalless draw against Paraguay. Two encounters with Jamaica followed in 2020, resulting in a 3-0 win in the first and a 2-1 loss in the second.

Following the coronavirus pandemic interruptions, the Saudi national team took part in only one friendly during 2021, a 1-0 win over Kuwait.

The following year, with the World Cup in mind, saw Renard’s team play eight friendly matches: Consecutive 1-0 losses against Colombia and Venezuela; three 0-0 draws with Ecuador, the US, and Honduras; a 1-0 win over Iceland; a 1-1 draw with Panama; and finally, a 1-0 defeat to a strong Croatia team.

The team’s most recent friendly came on Friday, a 2-1 home loss to Venezuela.
