LONDON: The Syrian Arab Republic’s Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra held on Tuesday discussions with a US military delegation led by Maj. Gen. Kevin J. Lambert, the commander of the international coalition against Daesh.

Lambert, who leads the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, discussed regional developments with Abu Qasra and Hussein Al-Salama, the general intelligence chief.

They explored ways to enhance cooperation across various military fields, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.

The meeting follows Syria’s control of Qasrak air base in the Hasakah countryside this week. This was the last one to be handed over by US forces to the Syrian army, helping Damascus to restore control over all territory.

The move reflects improved relations between Damascus and Washington since the October 2025 meeting between President Ahmad Al-Sharaa and US President Donald Trump at the White House.

The US began to establish a military presence in Syria after intervening alongside an international coalition in 2014 to fight Daesh, which controlled swathes of the country and northern Iraq.
