What We Are Reading Today: ‘The AI‑Ready Doctor’ by Dr. Ameed Khalid Abdulhamid

British dentist and researcher Dr. Ameed Khalid Abdulhamid explores the ethical and practical aspects of blending artificial intelligence into clinical practice in his book, “The AI‑Ready Doctor: Rethinking Clinical Judgment, Responsibility, and Trust in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”
The book explores how medical algorithms support clinical practice, emphasizing that AI serves as an assistive tool rather than a replacement for clinical judgment. It also discusses the evolving role of physicians as interpreters and decision-makers of algorithm-driven analysis, emphasizing the ethical boundaries for AI integration and the risks of over-reliance and cognitive de-skilling in health work.

Dr. Abdulhamid is a visiting professor of medical AI ethics at the University of East London and has authored several works in both Arabic and English on AI in healthcare.

He told Arab News that the next major challenge in the health sector is to ensure the responsible use of AI technologies that preserve the roles of physicians and healthcare workers in delivering quality patient care.

Dr. Abdulhamid lived in Saudi Arabia for 25 years and noticed the Kingdom’s growing role as a global hub for digital health and AI innovation, supported by an ethical and regulatory framework under Vision 2030, led by the Saudi Data and AI Authority.
