LONDON: Syrian authorities announced on Thursday the resumption of flights to Damascus International Airport from Doha and Jeddah, beginning May 1, following weeks of stoppage amid the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
The Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport said that Qatar Airways would resume daily flights from Doha to Damascus. The Saudi carrier Flynas also confirmed that it will operate three flights from Jeddah to the Syrian capital on Friday next week.
Mustafa Khairallah, head of the authority’s media office, said that this move signified a major step toward enhancing regional connectivity, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.
He added that resuming flights was expected to aid the recovery of air transport at Damascus International Airport, amid improving security in the region, SANA added.
Syria reopened its airspace and resumed air traffic in early April following a US-Iran ceasefire agreement.
Damascus International Airport is the largest in the country and connects to other domestic destinations, such as Aleppo in the north. It has seen a gradual recovery in flight activity following the fall of the Bashar Assad regime in December 2024.
