Saudi crown prince chairs GCC summit in Jeddah

RIYADH: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has chaired on Tuesday the Gulf Consultative Summit in Jeddah, which brings together leaders and heads of delegations of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.

The summit addressed a number of issues related to regional and international developments and the coordination of efforts related to them. 

Earlier, the crown prince received leaders of the GCC on Tuesday in preparation for ‌the summit .

The crown prince welcomed Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah upon his arrival at the King Abdulaziz International Airport.

Later, he also received Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan was welcomed by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.

Following the meeting, GCC Secretary-General Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi said leaders focused on escalating regional tensions and recent Iranian attacks targeting member states and Jordan.

He said they strongly condemned the strikes on civilian and infrastructure sites as violations of sovereignty and international law, and called on Iran to take serious steps to rebuild trust.

Al-Budaiwi said the leaders affirmed the bloc’s collective right to self-defense under international law, stressing that GCC security is indivisible.

He added they rejected any attempts to disrupt navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and called for the restoration of stability and freedom of movement in the vital waterway.

Al-Budaiwi also said the leaders praised the readiness of GCC armed forces and the swift recovery efforts, including the rapid rehabilitation of damaged energy facilities and measures to maintain supply chains.

He concluded that the summit underscored the need to accelerate joint projects, including the Gulf Railway, energy and water interconnection initiatives, and enhanced military coordination, including an early warning system for missile threats.
