ISLAMABAD: Pakistani airline Airblue has launched direct flights from Lahore to Baku, the Pakistani embassy in Azerbaijan announced this week, as Islamabad eyes increased regional connectivity with Central Asian countries.

Pakistan has sought to increase air connectivity with Central Asia in recent years. Its former national flag carrier, PIA, started direct flights to Baku from Lahore last year.

“A new milestone achieved in relations. Airblue has started direct flights from Lahore to Baku,” the Pakistan embassy in Azerbaijan wrote on Saturday.

The embassy did not say how many flights Airblue intends to operate within a week between the two cities.

Azerbaijan Airlines, also known as AZAL, has been operating direct flights between Baku and Islamabad since 2023.

Islamabad, which has cordial ties with most Central Asian states, especially Azerbaijan, has sought to expand trade, diplomatic engagement, investment and regional connectivity with these countries.

Pakistan and Azerbaijan enjoy close relations and cooperation in several domains such as defense, trade, investment, agriculture, economy and others.
