RIYADH: The Municipality of Jeddah governorate began issuing evacuation notices on Sunday for 129 buildings deemed at risk of collapse in the southern Ghulail neighborhood.

The news comes as part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and protect lives and property from the dangers posed by deteriorating structures, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

The municipality’s emergency and crisis management team has begun on-site notifications for the buildings included in the risk measure, in preparation for completing the approved legal procedures with the relevant authorities.

This action comes under the municipality’s program to address unsafe buildings at risk of collapse across the governorate.

Previous phases of the program have already been implemented in several neighborhoods, including Al-Faisaliyah, Al-Rabwah, Al-Farouq and Al-Ruwais, through field inspections and the completion of legal procedures for cases requiring intervention.

The municipality affirmed that it would continue implementing the approved procedures, beginning with the identification and documentation of building conditions, followed by notifying property owners and granting them the legally mandated grace period.

Earlier this year, evacuation notices were issued for 1,011 dilapidated buildings in the city’s Al-Ruwais district.

The campaign began in 2021 under the Jeddah Central Project.

In 2022, the Jeddah Governorate’s Undeveloped Neighborhoods Committee began paying SR1 billion (nearly $267 million) in compensation to citizens whose properties were demolished as part of the city’s massive development project.

The government has provided services to the owners of the demolished properties in the coastal city, where the municipal authorities have evaluated tens of districts for restoration, modification or demolition.
