RIYADH: Mahd Sports Academy on Tuesday unveiled a series of new stadium and facility names inspired by landmark moments in Saudi sporting history, in a move it said links the Kingdom’s past achievements with its future ambitions.

The initiative aims to celebrate some of Saudi Arabia’s most significant sporting successes while inspiring young athletes training at the academy, it added.

The newly named venues include “Stadium 84,” which commemorates the Kingdom’s first AFC Asian Cup triumph in 1984. “Stadium 88” and “Stadium 96” mark the national team’s subsequent Asian Cup victories in 1988 and 1996.

“Stadium 89” honors the under-16 national team’s victory at the 1989 FIFA U-16 World Championship, which remains one of the country’s most notable achievements in youth football.

In athletics, the academy named its main track after Saudi runner Hadi Soua’an Al-Somaily, who became the first Saudi athlete to claim an Olympic medal when he won silver in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

Looking to the future, the academy also unveiled “Stadium 2034,” a venue honoring Saudi Arabia’s preparations to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, as well as its long-term ambitions for the development of sport in general.

The academy said its naming initiative aimed to strengthen the connections between young athletes and the Kingdom’s sporting heritage, and encourage them to build on the achievements of previous generations.

The preservation and celebration of major national sporting accomplishments is part of its broader mission to develop future champions capable of representing Saudi Arabia on the international stage, it added.
