Saudi teams represent Kingdom at leading Science Olympiads

  • Gifted students compete against peers from more than 100 countries in biology, mathematics contests in Lithuania, China

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia has sent teams of gifted students to represent the Kingdom at two of the world’s most prestigious science competitions this month as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen its presence in international academic Olympiads.

The Saudi biology team is competing in the International Biology Olympiad in Vilnius, Lithuania, from July 12 to 19, alongside more than 300 students from 78 countries, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Meanwhile, the Saudi mathematics team is competing in the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai, China, until July 21, with students from more than 100 countries.

The biology team consists of four secondary school students, while the mathematics team has six. Both teams were prepared by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, known as Mawhiba, in partnership with the Ministry of Education through Mawhiba’s International Olympiads Program.

The students underwent extensive training through specialized forums, theoretical and practical camps, and advanced coaching by national and international experts.

Their preparation began with the National Science and Mathematics Olympiad, known as “Nasmo,” which identifies talented students before they advance to higher levels of training and international competition.

The International Biology Olympiad is the world’s leading life sciences competition for secondary school students. Participants are assessed through advanced examinations that test scientific knowledge, laboratory skills, and the ability to solve complex biological problems.

The competition also promotes scientific cooperation and knowledge exchange among participating countries while highlighting biology’s role in addressing global challenges such as health, sustainable agriculture, environmental protection, and climate adaptation.

Meanwhile, the International Mathematical Olympiad is the world’s oldest and most prestigious mathematics competition for high school students. Launched in Romania in 1959 with seven participating countries, it has grown to include more than 100 nations.

The Olympiad consists of two examinations, during which students solve six challenging problems in geometry, algebra, combinatorics, and number theory. The contest tests analytical thinking, creativity, and advanced problem-solving skills.

Saudi Arabia first attended the International Mathematical Olympiad as a scientific observer in Japan in 2003 before sending its first student team to Greece in 2004. Since then, the Kingdom has maintained a regular presence at the competition.
