ALEPPO: Syrian authorities arrested suspected Daesh members and seized explosives and weapons on Tuesday during counterterrorism raids targeting the group’s hideouts in Aleppo and the surrounding countryside.
The joint operation, carried out by the Internal Security Forces and the General Intelligence Directorate, uncovered warehouses containing explosives, improvised explosive devices and other weapons belonging to Daesh cells in Aleppo and the town of Al-Bab, Syria’s Interior Ministry said. It did not disclose how many suspects were arrested, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.
The ministry said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and strengthen security across the country, and security agencies had foiled several Daesh plots in recent months.
Although Daesh lost the last of the territory it controlled in Syria in 2019, the group has continued to stage attacks using sleeper cells, particularly in parts of northern Syria and the country’s central desert region.
Operations targeting remnants of the group have been stepped up since transitional authorities came to power in Syria following the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024 after almost 14 years of civil war.
