KINSHASA: The Democratic Republic of Congo welcomed yesterday UN sanctions imposed on M23 rebels and their alleged Rwandan allies, saying they could dissuade them from further “military adventures”.
“It’s a condemnation we expected... and it arrives at the right time because these groups threaten to destabilize Africa for decades, especially in the Great Lakes region,” DRC government spokesman Lambert Mende told AFP.
“I think it’s a very good decision,” he added, referring to the United Nations Security Council’s move Monday to slap an arms embargo on the two groups.
