Three schools that have best implemented the Saudi Environment Society’s (SENS) Green School Program will receive awards on the sidelines of the fourth annual Gulf Environment and Sustainable Development forum in Riyadh on April 14.
Prince Turki bin Nasser, the president of the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment and chairman of SENS announced this.
Implementation of the program was started in 2011 in all governmental schools in the Kingdom, to increase environmental awareness among students, their parents and society at large.
“This program was initiated at the request of Prince Turki bin Nasser, who advised to focus on environmental education for the new generation,” said Majda Aburas, president of SENS.
SENS trained a number of teachers from governmental schools and assisted the institutions to implement eco-awareness in their institutions and curriculum. SENS also provided essential equipment and guidelines, continuous inspection and gave a three-months’ time span to implement the system.
SENS Green School trainers are visiting and giving workshops and trainings four times a week and making a report afterwards within the selected parameters.
“The audit reports which we generated for each participating school gave a clear indication which schools were applicable for the Prince Turki bin Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud Award for 2013,” she said.
Prince Turki bin Nasser said that the importance of the Green School Program is to provide young people with environmental awareness and the nation with a culture inextricably linked to the environment. The program teaches children to preserve their resources for a sustainable development.
