Carrot and stick policy needed

This is with reference to the report “Three to die for Riyadh bombing” (March 7). This is a very important development. This judgment will act as a deterrent. It has been noticed that at times the fear of punishment prevents miscreants from carrying out their evil acts. Sermons, lectures or statements often fall on deaf ears.
The Kingdom’s efforts to curb extremist tendencies and terrorism should be appreciated. This verdict against the perpertrators of the crime will further improve the situation. It also shows a zero-tolerance policy of Saudi Arabia toward such elements and the proponents of deviant ideologies. I believe that the Kingdom is the only country in the region and the Muslim world that has adopted a multi-pronged strategy to fight the menace of terrorism. It is working on various fronts effectively. I believe countries like Pakistan should also try to emulate the Kingdom in this regard. One on hand, Pakistani authorities in tandem with religious authorities should try to educate the masses on this issue while on the other they must deal with extremist elements and terror outfits with an iron fist. A carrot and stick approach will also be effective in curbing extremism in Pakistan.
