The WWE matches kept the audience at the edge of their seats on Friday night as the world’s best and well-known wrestlers displayed their skills and strength at the Green Hall Stadium at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Olympic Complex here.
The sports complex was vibrantly alive, the atmosphere was electric and the spectators all agog as they waited for the wrestlers to enter the ring to dish out fun and entertainment as well as excitement.
The main attraction was the nightcap between veteran wrestler and action star John Cena and Randy Orton, who displayed his fighting skills which he had used before against the Marine 1 star who is not a 14-time world champion for nothing.
“Both of them were good-- world class. Both of them were strong, endowed with well-sculpted bodies bulging and rippling with muscles as if they could carry the world on their shoulders,” said 21-year-old Mohammed Asim Irfan, an Indian who works for Saudi Maritime Company.
As Cena and Orton faced off across the ring, waiting for an opportune time to lunge at each other, the crowd chanted and applauded incessantly to urge them to show their antics and prowess for which they had been known.
” The crowd chanting their names in respect and reverence was a deja vu: Back home in the United States, the adoring crowd did the same,” Irfan added.
But Cena — who has become a legend in his time and his name a byword in the wrestling world — was a thinking fighter, in stark contrast to Orton who relied on brute strength and was aggressive.
“But it was also his undoing. His aggressive tactics did him in ,” said Cenon “Nonie” C. Sagadal Jr. of RCBC -Telemoney and one of the legions of wrestling fans in the Kingdom.
Ultimately, Cena prevailed, his victory a fillip to his increasing popularity.
Irfan , Sagadal and other wrestling fans were one in saying that the wrestling event, being held for the first time in the Kingdom, had so far lived up to expectations of fans who did not mind forking over SR1,250 for platinum tickets just to see their wrestling idols fight live before their admiring eyes.
As the clock struck 8:30 p.m. the sports complex buzzed with excitement as the first set of fighters-- Irish Shaemus and American Ryback-- appeared and ran toward the ring.
As expected, the crowd reacted as the match started and chanted “Shaemus, Shaemus!” Shaemus won.
“Hearing it, the Irish wrestler displayed his signature move-- brogue kick-- with adeptness and agility. The match lasted for 20 minutes, after which the victorious acknowledged the crowd by waving and nodding at them,” said Eric P. Asi, an engineer at Nardeen Lighting.
An exciting match also followed, featuring Syrian Sami Zain who was born and brought up in Canada and Damien Sandow, which the latter won hands down.
“Veteran wrestler as he is, Damien Sandow was just too much for Zain who gamely fought and gave his best which went not unappreciated by the crowd,” said Meynard Pesig, who works for Light Technologies.
Then the exciting six-man tag team took center stage, featuring The Shield and The Family, which did not also fail to evoke laughter and excitement from the audience.
The Shield’s Roman Reigns and Wyett Family’s Bray Wyett kicked off the fight. The other Shield members were Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose while The Wyett Family included Luke Harper and Erick Rowan. The event was won by The Shield.
Heat Slater also squared off with Kofi Kingston but the latter prevailed. The Usos comprising Jimmy and Jey Uso went up against Goldust and Cody Rhodes. The Usos won.
