Manhole victim had just completed Ph.D. from US

The Saudi man who fell to his death trying to rescue his son from a manhole on a popular Jeddah street on Thursday had just completed a doctoral degree from the US, a relative revealed.
Ali Abu Assi, a relative of Ali Mansho, said the victim had just come back to the Kingdom from the US a few months ago after earning a Ph.D. in architecture.
“The victim was on scholarship through his employer, Saudi Airlines,” he said. “His wife and mother are refusing to eat or drink from the shock,” he said.
“Both father and son were the victims of an open manhole worth less than SR100.” He explained: “Ali had tried to grab his son, but oil inside the hole caused him to slip, hitting his head on the way down.”
Abu Assi said a citizen tried to rescue the man, who had stayed alive for two minutes before dying.
Civil Defense personnel immediately arrived at the scene and pulled the five-year-old child, who also died, out of the hole. A security patrol corporal and another person were injured during the rescue operation.
