The organization of eight South Asian nations, namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka is known as the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) will be meeting in Nepal on Nov. 26 and 27. In this 18th summit of the organization, which was established in 1985, Myanmar, China, Iran, the EU nations and the US will also be present as observers. All the member countries were once under the British rule.
The world we live in has not changed significantly. All SAARC countries are dependent on the old imperialist powers and their organizations like the IMF, WTO, World Bank etc. Religious differences in the region have been used to the maximum to divide the people for political gains. Although the organization was established nearly 30 years ago there is hardly any achievement to boast about. The disputes between the two powerful SAARC members, India and Pakistan, are really hampering the progress of the organization. Smaller member countries are pinning their hopes on the upcoming summit. We also hope that all the eight members will unite for the sake of a successful and fruitful outcome. We wish the summit all the best. — S.H. Moulana, Riyadh
