A number of residents in Makkah have complained about mounds of rubbish piling in their neighborhoods, questioning the sincerity of efforts to maintain cleanliness especially in light of the Makkah municipality recently having approved five new contracts with cleaning companies.
Voicing their concern about the accumulation of waste which poses a health and environmental hazard, the residents demanded the municipality find a speedy solution to the problem particularly in neighborhoods where waste has not been collected for up to three days.
Dumpsters brimming over with garbage and other household waste are particularly evident along the roads and the neighborhoods of Al-Hendawayah, Al-Mansour, Al-Tandabawi, and Um-Ghadab.
Makkah Mayor Osama Al-Bar said that the newly contracted cleaning companies are in a transitioning phase which often results in slipshod service. He said that residents will notice a significant improvement in hygiene levels by the second month of the contracts taking effect.
