Prof. Talat Ahmad, vice chancellor of the New Delhi-based Jamia Millia Islamia University, has promised hostel facilities to NRI (non-resident Indian) girls and announced the provision of the university guest house for Jamia alumni when they visit the alma mater.
He also promised to institutionalize the alumni-university relationship for better coordination and transparency in the campus.
These announcements came during the Jamia alumni meet in Riyadh recently.
Commenting on the announcements, Shabbir Nadwi, a senior Jamia alumni working in Riyadh, said: “This is a huge relief for us.”
He explained that children of NRIs in the Kingdom can only avail education up to the 12th grade following which they have to be sent to India for further studies. It is difficult for most Indian parents to send their daughters back to India due to lack of dormitory facilities in most institutions.
Nadwi said the opening of the university guest house for Jamia alumni when they visit the university was a significant gesture, as it would ease the expenses of costly hotels and accommodation in Delhi.
Irfanul Haque, joint secretary of Jamia alumni association, welcomed the effort to institutionalize the alumni-university relationship saying, “The vice chancellor has promised to create a portal for Jamia alumni so that they can register online and be in touch with the alma mater to know about various developments.”
He hailed the announcement that deserving alumni will be included in the university’s main decision making body – the executive and academic councils.
Haque welcomed the idea of the endowment fund for the university through which Jamia alumni could channelize their contribution, which will be used to provide scholarships to deserving students.
