All is not ‘well’: 3 dead in Tabuk farm tragedy

The Civil Defense on Thursday morning retrieved the bodies of two brothers and a child who had fallen into a well on their farm in Umluj in Tabuk.
The three people had fallen into the well on Wednesday evening and were covered in mud when the sides of the hole collapsed. The rescuers were only able to recover the bodies after several hours of digging through the mud, a Civil Defense source said.
The Civil Defense identified the victims as a 70-year-old man, his 50-year-old brother and the two-year-old son of one of them.
This event is eerily similar to a tragedy in January 2014, also in Tabuk, when rescuers were unable to save the life of six-year-old Lama Al-Rouqi who died after falling into an abandoned well.
Lama was out picnicking with her family when she fell into the well in Al-Asmar valley in Haqel Governorate on Dec. 20, 2013. She fell more than 30 meters into the 100-meter-deep and half-a-meter-wide well.
The girl had fallen into the well while playing with her sister.
This tragedy caused widespread outrage, with citizens calling on the government to secure wells on state-owned land. There were also moves by the government to force citizens to secure wells on their own land.
