15 people have been injured in a traffic accident involving 54 cars on the Jubail–Dammam highway. According to eyewitnesses, there was a minor collision between two cars, which was followed by a series of cars colliding with each other because of the heavy fog that engulfed the area, blocking the vision of drivers who could only be guided by other cars’ head and tail lights.
Director of Qatif traffic, Col. Saeed Al-Qahtani, said the accident resulted from a lack of adherence of some drivers to traffic instructions during fog, and it was apparent that some drivers were reckless in that they were driving too fast or following too closely during the heavy conditions. He said that driving during heavy fog should be avoided as much as possible in order to limit traffic accidents on highways and roads. In time of heavy fog drivers should stop the car at the right hand roadside.
The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment Protection has warned motorists on its official account on Twitter of low visibility levels because of the fog, in Qatif, Dhahran, Dammam, Alkhobar, Al-Ahsa and other neighboring areas.
