It is really saddening to read about the unrest in Maldives. According to reports, protests erupted in the country over the arrest of former President Mohamed Nasheed. He was the first democratically-elected president of the country.
Like many other Muslim countries, he has been forced out of power. It is feared that the ongoing unrest might provide unscrupulous elements with an opportunity to fill in the vacuum that is usually created in the aftermath of such turmoil.
We have seen similar things taking place in Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Syria. Due to political unrest, these countries have become breeding grounds for terrorism.
Maldives is known for its peaceful environment and scenic beauty attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world. Despite being one of the smallest nations in the world, the literacy rate in that country is well above 99 percent. I urge all the countries neighboring Maldives to take necessary measures to help restore normality to the country before the situation gets out of control. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should also swing into action at the earliest and take concrete measures to resolve the crisis.
