JEDDAH: Postgraduate students at Imam Mohammed bin Saud Islamic University studying in the parallel education system were shocked to find the program canceled by Minister of Education Azzam Al-Dakhil.
While the decision stipulated excluding those who had already begun their studies, students at the Department of Economics say their departments were closed to them without regard for the minister’s exception.
Master’s degree students in the department Hassan Al-Ajami and Mohammed Khabtani said they received their final acceptance letters before the decision was made, and the university passed out schedules and opened lecture halls, while students purchased books and supplies.
“Suddenly, the program was completely shut down two weeks after starting, which is a clear violation of the decision of the minister to exempt students who who had been accepted this year.”
Students whose programs were suspended say the decision has affected them “psychologically and financially,” as many have paid fees to begin their master’s courses during evening hours.
One student, who requested anonymity, said the university “not only violated the minister’s directive, but also harmed accepted students who turned down job opportunities in order to study, and had paid all necessary fees.”
Head of the Economics Department at Imam Mohammed bin Saud Islamic University Abdulaziz Al-Qaed had sent letters to 28 students in the department, confirming their acceptance by the university.
When asked about the circumstances of the case, the official spokesman of the Ministry of Education, Mubarak Al-Qasimi, said that the question should be directed to the official spokesman of the university.
