The death of six-year-old Lama Al-Rouqi in a Tabuk well two weeks ago has seen authorities launch plans to close abandoned and unattended wells across the country.

Ibrahim Al-Shahrani, head of the Ghamid Al-Zinad municipality in Baha, said officials in the region would temporarily seal some unattended wells by welding the openings with iron covers, and completely filling in unused ones in the next few days.

Al-Shahrani said municipal officials conducted extensive field surveys over the last two days to find these wells.

He said the municipality had assigned a contractor to seal the unused wells after installing artesian wells to provide water for public parks. Some people had broken the locks on some wells and left them open, he said.
