JEDDAH: Neighborhoods in the Aziziah and Mushrifa districts in Jeddah have been suffering from an overflow of sewage water since Eid Al-Adha.

The problem is acute on Tadamun Al-Arabi street in the Aziziah district near the traffic signal on Amir Majed Street, where pedestrians, including many children, are routinely splashed by speeding cars as they cross the street.

The residents of Tadamun Al-Arabi Street in particular have been complaining about the blocked sewage line since Eid Al-Adha, yet nothing has yet been done about the issue.

“The sewage line has been blocked for many days, and the streets are full of water. Because of this, getting into cars and simply walking on the street has become difficult,” said Salman Baksh, a resident.

He said that the water is coming out of manholes on the road, adding that the smell is unbearable. The dirty water is a ripe breeding ground for mosquitoes and diseases. “We have been suffering from the foul odor and germs emanating from this swamp of sewage for far too long now,” Baksh said.

Such contaminated water poses a major health hazard to local residents and increases the risk of the spread of dengue fever.

Another resident, Hafiz Rahman, said that the situation is very bad on the street but no one from the municipality has come to check and solve the problem. “No one is paying attention to the important fact that there are children living in the neighborhood who are now playing in this dirty water, which contains so many diseases and germs that will make them very sick if the municipality does not act,” Hafiz Rahman concluded.
