LONDON: Despite winning the toss and electing to bowl England were happy with their work on the opening day of the second Ashes Test in Adelaide., according to Craig Overton.
Australia started the second day earlier today on 209 for four having been put in by England skipper Joe Root in the day-night clash. But even though many put the hosts slightly ahead — the tourists having struggled to take wickets at regular intervals — Overton, who took the prized wicket of Steve Smith (41), claimed England remain optimistic.
“There were overhead skies and we felt we could get early ones. We bowled well all day and didn’t get the nicks we deserved,” the debutant bowler said.
“We’re pretty happy. We’d have liked a few more wickets. There’s still a bit of work to do.
And of the decision to bowl first Overton added: “We had a chat before the start of play and Root thought we should bowl, and all the bowlers were behind him. I felt I was a little bit off at first but to get that wicket at the end of the day was really good.
“Smith is a good player so it was nice to get him out. It looked like we got under his skin a little bit, which might have added to our advantage, but I don’t know what was said — I was out on the boundary.”
