LONDON: Arsene Wenger has revealed the big problem he faces, and it is not the horde of fans wanting him to leave Arsenal but the embarrassment of attacking riches at his disposal.
The Arsenal boss has been under fire for several seasons as the North London club’s wait for the elusive Premier League title continues.
On Sunday, however, Wenger’s side showed just what they are capable of as they thrashed an albeit abject Everton 5-2 at Goodison Park. Goals from Nacho Monreal, Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey reminded both fans and Arsenal’s rivals of just what the side can do when in full flow.
But, most importantly, Sunday heralded the first time the attacking trio of Lacazette, Ozil and Sanchez had all started and the result was there for everyone, especially the Everton defense, to see.
All three work well together and their movement resulted in a fine goal when the wantaway pair of Sanchez and Ozil combined for the German to head past the besieged Jordan Pickford just after the break.
With Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere on the bench, and Danny Welbeck and Santi Cazorla set to return from injuries it is easy to see why, for once, Wenger should be smiling. And the Arsenal boss admitted he has now got the firepower to silence the boo boys.
“That’s the luxury I have at the moment and the difficulty I have as well,” Wenger told the club’s website.
“All these players do well, play well and they deserve to play.
“Fortunately, we have important games every week, so I can give competition to everybody. We have so much offensive force on the bench as well. It’s really a strong point of the club at the moment.”
The elephant in the room is obviously the fact that Ozil and Sanchez have been, up until the Everton clash, acting like two stroppy, petulant teenagers. The Chilean for so long now has been at the heart of everything good about Arsenal. However, this summer saw him strongly linked with a move to Manchester City. Wenger and Arsenal held firm and Sanchez stayed.
Sunday’s performance and the presence of Lacazette has given hope to Arsenal fans and Wenger that the Chilean may stick around longer than the January transfer window.
“When (Lacazette) has a goalscoring chance, he is a good finisher,” Sanchez said. “He’s a classic striker.
“He was a successful player in France, and the two of us work well together. He’s an excellent player.
“I believe we have (a good understanding). We haven’t played that many games together but when we have, I like how he plays.”
