This is with reference to the article “Is another war in the making?” (Jan. 21) by Osama Al-Sharif.
Frankly speaking, the region cannot bear the brunt of another war. However, it would be futile to call on Iran or its stooge Hezbollah to exercise restraint. Tehran is already playing a dirty game in the region by promoting sectarianism. Now Yemen is up in flames. It is no secret that Tehran is behind the Houthis. In such a situation, any confrontation with Israel will only push the region into an abyss. What will Tehran gain from all these conflicts? Perhaps, Iran is thinking that by using these tactics, it can render the Arab world weak and rule the roost. It is living in a fool’s paradise. Tehran has been blinded by its sectarian zeal. It should realize that it represents but a tiny majority in the Muslim world. It can never emerge as the representative of all Muslims, a position that Saudi Arabia rightfully enjoys.
Instead of fomenting unrest across the region, Iran should try to cooperate with neighboring countries for the greater good of its citizens. Iranian economy is not at all in the position to support such adventures. Tehran’s policies clearly indicate that the Iranian leadership is not at all bothered about the welfare of the common man.
Basically, Iran is being obsessed by the idea of emerging as the regional superpower, who could manipulate the affairs of this part of the world according to its whims and wishes. — Ghazal Ahmed, Dammam
