I cannot help mulling over the idea of true and false. I read a piece of news today about something having happened somewhere or someone having said this or that. After a couple of days I read that it was a hoax. Some good spirit wanted to have a laugh at the gullible readers who — bona fide — would believe it.
I see the photo of a beautiful actress or top model and I admire the perfection of her skin, the shape of her eyes and her perfectly proportioned features, only to later realize that — beside the plastic surgery she might have had — her picture had been photo-shopped. Even some news about medicine, scientific discoveries etc. get often denied or contradicted.
I have reached a point where I am wondering if I should doubt what anyone I encounter, even a friend is telling me...My mind is swimming in an ocean of news, scoops, information, sentences, words and I feel I am drowning.
While metaphorically sinking deeper and deeper into this logorrheic sea, I realize that such “sea” is not even made of real “water.” It is the virtual ocean created by technology.
It is an artificial voice that tells me all sort of things, most of which are plainly false or useless or purposely deceitful. They are alluring because they tickle my interest (great discovery: A new method to lose 10 kilograms in one day or regain the face of your twenties overnight...), or they attract my senses (some nice music — provided you don’t listen to the lyrics or a good show, until you don’t start hearing words that you don’t want to hear or seeing images that you don’t want to see). But this is not all: You may even be brought to believe that you are capable of creating wealth, health, beauty, happiness and love by simply swallowing a pill.
What a strange place our world has become! I am not here to talk about the “good old days.” Enough of that. Although it might seem that the past, in hindsight, has a way of appearing more appealing than the present, I wonder if this is true or false. I do not deny that it could be true, at least to a certain extent. No era, no time, no situation is ever perfect. There are always flaws due to the human nature and to circumstances.
But I also believe that the modern time could be better if we used a bit more logic, if we tried to understand — in a nutshell — if people made more use of their intelligence. Nowadays it appears that too many people limit themselves to simply follow the flow.
They are even proud of their position of “followers.” They feel they are modern, they are “in,” they “belong” to the new world, to the new Earth. But a new Earth should be — perhaps — a little less technological and a little more authentically creative. Imagination should be born from your own mind instead of being led toward you by external means, instead of being presented to you on a silver tray, through a simple click and a display screen.
How many individuals, in our society — especially the younger ones — honestly care to “think”, to discover, to imagine, to try, to create something new, something different? Uniformity seems the new motto. Look at how young people dress, look at their hair styles, listen to the language they use, pay attention to what they do. How many are truly “original”? I would love to ask them, “Why be mediocre when you can be outstanding?”
In conclusion, I once again observe a world that is struggling to find a new identity through a never-ending technological progress but which, so far, only seems capable of creating fictitious images that are believed to be true, which, in turn, are bound to create uniform, puzzling, worrisome new generations.
