Culture and Information Minister Adel Al-Toraifi ordered the suspension of a local sports daily, Arreyadi, for three days after it published an offensive carton which insulted Qatar.
The move aims to maintain good relations between Gulf countries and the Kingdom.
The minister ordered a ministerial investigation into the conduct of Editor in Chief Saleh Al-Khalif and cartoonist Yazeed Al-Harthi.
Saud Al-Kateb, undersecretary at the Ministry of Culture and Information, said the newspaper committed a grave mistake in publishing an abusive cartoon against a Gulf country. “This is unacceptable,” he said, and stressed that the ministry was justified in taking action against the newspaper.
The ministry is preparing to issue new regulations and strict measures against sports fanaticism.
“The new regulations will protect national unity,” said Al-Kateb.
“The new measures will be stricter against those who incite sports fans by ignoring journalistic ethics,” he said.
