This is with reference to the article “Are you an e-mail addict who needs a fix” (Sept. 11) by Nishant Arora. It is not just about e-mail, we have become addicted to the Internet. Truth be told, without an Internet connection one’s computer appears lifeless or to be more exact without a soul. Internet, undoubtedly, is one of the most amazing inventions of the modern times. We cannot deny the fact that it is addictive as well. It, however, depends on an individual how to use this technology. I believe that with the advent of social media the negative side of the Internet has become more pronounced.
Addiction to social media is affecting society in various ways. The reason for the immense popularity of social media is perhaps unavailability of or inadequate healthy activities. In today’s age, we have become machines following a very strict schedule. Our daily lives usually revolve around a few activities — office, home and shopping. In such a hectic routine, one seldom gets the chance to hang out with friends or get involved in sporting activities. So only one option is left i.e. social media or Internet, which serves as an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily routine. — Yawar Malik, Dammam
