Vehicle owners can claim damages resulting from speed bumps, potholes

RIYADH: In the wake of numerous accidents that take the lives of innocent people as a result of neglected road works and the damages to vehicles because of speed bumps or potholes in the streets, many calls were made demanding compensation for victims or their families.
Social media sites have been circulating several letters encouraging motorists to demand this right if their vehicles are damaged by said bumps and potholes.
One such letter said the car of one driver was seriously damaged by a hole in the street. The driver called the emergency number 940 of Riyadh Secretariat and requested a report from the traffic department, which helped him get compensation from the contractor who executed works on the road.
The letter also suggested that the culture of asking for one's rights be entrenched.
Lawyer Nasser Al-Tuwaim called on the motorists whose vehicles were damaged because of bad road conditions to apply for compensation to the relevant authorities, confirming that the public should be aware of the regulations concerning damages to vehicles on public roads because of official neglect or negligence on the part of the contractor implementing the road project.
He said that such demands for compensation already exist in courts, which ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and were paid compensation by the contractors.
Col. Tariq Al-Rubaian, spokesman for the General Traffic Department, said that any driver whose car was damaged or who had an accident because of an artificial speed bump, a hole in the road or any such reason has the right to submit a complaint and demand compensation.
"He can start by requesting for the traffic patrol to write a report for him to prove the accident, register this at the traffic department and then submit the report to the relevant body to demand compensation," the spokesman was quoted as saying by a local publication.

Saudi Ministry to set up trial courts near women facilities

JEDDAH: The Saudi Supreme Judicial Council has decided to set up trial offices for traffic violations and accidents next to facilities where women are detained. This initiative aims to expedite their trial in cases of accidents and traffic violations.
It falls under the myriad measures and initiatives adopted by the Ministry of Justice and the Supreme Judicial Council that aim to speedily examine various cases in general and women’s cases in particular, as well as to empower women in the judicial field.
The judicial measures and initiatives supporting women included granting the mother her right to be the guardian of a child under her custody.
This will make it easy for a woman to visit the Civil Status Bureau, Passports Department, embassies, education administrations and other pertinent authorities to prove that her family is eligible for social security.
