JEDDAH, 11 January — "Discover Saudi Arabia", the new tourism package launched by Saudi Arabian Airlines, hopes to attract over 6,000 visitors from Japan, Europe and the United States to the Kingdom in 2001.

Saudi Arabia, once an unknown tourist destination to many, is now seeking to entice culture vultures and historical enthusiasts to promote its guided tour packages. Since opening its doors to non-religious tourism on a trial basis five years ago, some 2,000 visitors have had the opportunity to explore much of the country's unspoiled archeological sites, mountainous landscapes and beaches.

"Opening up the tourism market is a positive step in building better understanding between cultures. It also gives visitors a chance to witness first hand the rapid developments which have taken place in the Kingdom," a Saudia spokesperson said.
