DUBAI, 31 July — Oman, rich in tradition and terrain, is gearing up for a major influx of tourists this summer. A series of initiatives by the government and five-star hotels, such as Sheraton Oman are certain to boost tourism to the sultanate this summer, according to experts. “We’re getting inquiries from around and outside the Gulf, especially Europe,” says Gerhard Foltin, general manager of the 217-room Sheraton Oman. “An easing of the visa situation, particularly for people form the UAE, is turning Oman into a ‘must-see’ weekend get-away destination. Travel agents note that the sultanate has all the right ingredients for the ideal tourism destination: Unspoiled landscapes, wonderful beaches and a fascinating culture. Muscat, the capital, reveals itself gradually and never completely — the buildings are entwined in the folds of serrated hills. Says Foltin: “Oman is truly a fascinating country. Muscat, the intimate, low-rise city has bustling souqs, elegant architecture and a wealth of luxury hotels.” Current efforts to promote tourism in Oman are expected to see the sultanate attract more than double the 2001 tourism figures. By 2020, tourism is expected to contribute at least five percent of GDP. (AN)
